Luckily, I tried the demo before I bought the game. It hangs on the loading screen. Right before the Select a Language menu swoops in, the screen goes black (sometimes affectionately known as the Black Screen of Death). Sometimes the language menu makes it a portion of the way onto the screen, but this is rare.

Technically, I suppose the game works if I set it to Windows 98/ME compatibility and disable Visual Themes and Desktop Composition. But that's just silly, plus it runs like crap in compatibility mode (most likely because CPU affinity is disabled).

But even though I can get it to "work", it just goes back to black screening at the loading screen if my Logitech Driving Force GT is plugged in. God forbid I want to use a racing wheel with my racing game!

Relevant technical specs are in my signature.

Re:Does Need for Speed Shift work on your PC?

Works fine for me, but I have experienced a few bugs while racing.

Windows 7 Ultimate (retail) 64-bit
AMD 7750 X2 (OC to 3.0GHz)
4 GB DDR2 800 (i know, i should run 1066)
8800 GT (OC 702 Core / 952 Mem)
22" LCD
Sidewinder Precision Wheel/Pedal (non-FF) (old but works flawlessly)

No issues starting the game. Runs smooth, no performance issues. I run all graphical settings on their max setting. I run 1680x1050, 16x AF, 4x AA.

Bugs experienced: Certain races will not allow the car to leave the starting line. Some cars tend to bounce way too much on certain tracks so if you do run off the track you have a ridiculous amount of effort to get back on the track, unrealistic. Also, some tracks, if you do happen to hit a wall, the car will be glued to that wall and you have to brake almost to 0 to get off of it. Unrealistic. Stupid AI loves to ram you off the road, however, trying to ram them off the road is next to impossible without wrecking yourself. Unrealistic. AI rubber band effect if you are leading. Unrealistic.

Overall, love the game. This is the only racing game I have played where the sense of raw speed is great. I actually feel the need to slow down so that I don't blast off the track in corners. Very enjoyable.

I use a Dell xps 420 with an nvidia 8800gt video card and vista -- It works great on my computer -- frame rates 50 to 60, no problems at all. Its probably the best racing game for me so far-- somewhat arcade at times, but it really makes the game a fun experience-- no more I play it, the more I like it. Sorry some seem to be having a problem because when it works it's great.

I've been running the game with no problems on XP Pro 32 bit and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, both OEM. Most settings are on high, some medium (can't remember which off the top of my head). Feels similar to V8 Supercars 3, which is still my favorite. Definitely a step in the right direction for EA in my opinion.

There's a few things I don't like, but not what I would call glitches:
*bounces a bit when off the track at times, but letting off the throttle and then tapping throttle gets it going
*when against a wall it, can't steer off it
*the paint/rims/graphics are a joke, as is the view control

system specs:
motherboard - Gigabyte EX38-DS5
CPU - E8400@4.0GHz
RAM - 2x2GB Kingston HyperX 1066
Video - HIS 4850 IceQ4
HDD - 2x1TB Samsung F1 (RAID 0, 3 partitions, XP/Win7/shared data drive)
sound - Auzen X-Fi Prelude 7.1
speakers - MegaWorks THX 550 5.1
game controller - Logitech Dual Action

The game runs but where the road should be I see only flashing colors, like strob lighting in a night club. lol very very disapointed in EA Games. Reading other blogs I found my Radeon HD 4890 and NFS S%$t do not get on. One of the people in support said (they are nice) that the reason was because NFS S%$t came out before Vista came out lol WTF!?! lol I am looking here everyday, waiting for the patch lol reminds me of my old commador64 days lol Wolfenstine runs better than this game lol

I have PS3, Xbox360 and Gaming PC. I thought purchasing this game on PC would be better than the PS3, better graphics etc boy was I wrong! but it sounds like you guys are having problems too.
At E3 2009 this game looked fantastic, what happened?

Well, I have had 4 encounters with the support chat, the last one saying they will refer me to a senior support tech.

Remove the graphics config and save file and retry....NOT
Run in Win98/ME Compatability Mode.....NOOOOOP
Uninstall and Reinstall using a new administrative user and patch it up....NOTHING YET
Lower the Desktop Resolution (which doesn't actually change the game resolution)....BAAH

What happens is I when I start career, I get the intro clip driving through the tunnel with the "The best Drivers" voiceover.
I get to the part where the voice over tells me it has secured a car for brandshatch and the voiceover says "Let's get out there".

It then loops back to the beginning of the intro clip driving through the tunnel. Infinite loop.

Provided a dxdiag in an earlier copy of this. Cut most of it it from this one

[quote=nfs_web.duanemore][quote=cem_ea_id.ximx][quote=nfs_web.duanemore]Windows Vista Home Premium
2GB System RAM
AMD Athlon 64 X2 DUal Core Processor 4000+ 2.10 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 2400 Display Adapter
256 MB Display Memory
Direct X 10
Pixer Shader Version 3

I Installed Shift from physical media, launch the program, configure my controller and start a career. It goes into the intro script and gets to the part where it telss me it has secured a car for the test run; it then loops back to the beginning of the intro script. Nothing I can do gets me out of this loop, other than ALT-TAB and kill the program.

I tried the chat support and they alleged it was a saved file problem.
I posted earlier about this odd endless loop in the intro clip to starting a career and the lack of help by chat tech support. The home PC was running VISTA and was compliant with the minimums.

I tried installing it on my work laptop which is running XP but also meets the minimums from a HW perspective. I get the same exact behavior. it shows the intro clip and right after it says "Let's get out there" it loops back to the beginning of the intro clip and the tunnel scene.

I wonder if I have flawed physical media.

However, I can't figure out how to download an electronic copy using the EA Download Manager. In theory I am able to, but I can't figure that out.

Any suggestions?

I would have to say that by now, everyone knows that there are some flaws in this game (SHIFT).

Yes this game runs on my PC. It didn't at first, but was mainly a sound card problem that once I had figured it out, was soon forgotten as I got into some really great racing action.

The sounds and the graphics blow me away.

I also enjoy the race track environment over the street-racing of past NFS efforts.

Well, I just completed this game on the Easy level. It's time to move on up now I guess...lol. Anyway, I just wanted to put in my .02 Here are the only issues I had with the hours, and hours of playing this game on my PC.

1. I had the "lost Career" issue happen one time. I don't know why, but as others have stated, it showed my car, but I was only allowed to create a New Career. Luckily I had a backup of 95% of my progress.

2. Yes, I did experience the "grass" issue.

3. On replays, my Logitech Momo wheel would move. I don't know if this issue has been addressed before or not, but I thought I would bring it up.

Other than that, the game played as I expected it to. I had NO CRASHES, and NO LOCKUPS of any sort. I have current Norton Ghost images of both XP, and Vista Ultimate that I would occasionally flip-flop between, just to compare the game's characteristics to see if there was an advantage of using one OS over the other. I saw absolutely no difference in FPS, loading times, etc.

My PC specs are listed below in my signature. I just don't understand how so many people could be having issues with this game, if their PCs are greatly exceeding the minimum system requirements for this game? I dunno guys, but for me personally, this game is a godsend from the "arcade-like" EA racing games that have come out in the past 8 or so years. I give it an 8/10.

Some players will have different taste's in racing games, which you all know by now (or should for that matter), if anyone has problems they'll sign-up and post (a no brainer lol), yes people will say how they feel towards this game but they're speaking their mind and thoughts (freedom of speech anyone), not all will have problems with this game however but doesn't mean they're not going to at all (to me, they're random and will happen at anytime).

@ jasonp312009

The only person on this page (the page i'm posting on) thats brought up the idea of making a thread about troubleshooting everyones problems would be you plus your offering to help hence bringing it up.

@ Philofish

I'm not too sure but what wont EA do or how far will they go to do something like that. Your best bet is to read the somewhat manual of this game all the way through and again, read the back of the game case for such things, if nothing is stated what so ever then you could always ask someone from EA (if you can find them on here), or ask on other forums or blogs about it.

If nothing both in the manual and back of game case at all and they're doing it, then it wont look good for EA will it.

1st of all, it should be stated both in the manual and on the back of the game case (so the user knows of such a thing) to be legal. I shouldn't need to say anything else regarding this i think.

@ 3342976352

No one has 100% the same hardware, software, plug-in hardware or even using the same os (xp, vista, win 7 or any sp's for either) whether they have x86 or x64 versions.
After waiting 2 weeks to oder my Gtx295 Nvidia graphics card I hope I can play today, and throw out my Radeon 4890HD in the bin, as the Radeon makes all funny colors in the sky in the games Terminator,Sims3 and NFS Shift.
The 30 or so other games some old like Baldurs Gate all the way too Left4dead Fallout3 Wolfenstine Crysis on max all work fine. My PC was a custom build from Umart @ southport on the goldcoast, aus they said the Radeon was just as good as the Nvidia and $200 less even though I wanted a Nvidia from the start. They are very intimidating when asking for help, almost like its too much of a problem from them to help you, this will be the last purchase I make from them. I have seen pictures on the net of people playing Shift with a Gtx295, but Shift only uses 1 of the muti cores inside, but I have read on the patch discussion that the patch will make shift take use of muti core video/graphic cards.
The only reason I should not be playing today is if I have to wait another week before I can pick it up due to it not been in store yet.
wish me luck
regards
Philo

i7
Vista64 (only because I am not sure if some software I am using will work with Win7)
Nvidia Gtx295 (soon I hope)

Re:Does Need for Speed Shift work on your PC?

I bought an xfx 4870 shortly before I bought Shift. I was experiencing the 'black screen' crashes when starting the test lap, or within 10 minutes of playing the game. (Same issue with COD MW2 also) After playing around with settings I found I could run the game at 1280x800 with high detail ok, but any higher and it crashed. After a lot of troubleshooting and trying workarounds from the forums with no success, I finally upgraded my case (had very cheap atx case) to a cooler master with four 120mm fans in it.

Now the game runs fine (grass in track/black sky/bouncing suspension occasionally) at a smooth framerate @1650x1080 full detail, even with 15 cars on the track. I have had the framerate drop considerably on rare occasions midway through a race but restarting usually sorts it.

Hope this helps, if anyone has a pedestal fan try running that facing directly into your case and see if shift runs ok, that's how I found it was temperature problems for me...

Other than that, I found driving from behind the car view was hard to contol (with wheel) and the sliding at every corner very annoying, but driving from cockpit view (my preferred) it is the best driving game to date and handles beautifully. I think when people are commenting on the handling physics of the game, they should mention whether they are using the external view or cockpit view because IMO the experience between the two is completely different.

Sorry for the long post!

Specs:
Logitech Driving Force Pro
C2D E8500 @3.16
4Gb Corsair Dominator DDR2 @1033
Asus P5QSE/R
450W p/s (works fine surprisingly)
Win 7 x64
