Ok so here is my problem, at the 'nick of time' job the game crashes and I also get the 'nfs.exe has encountered a problem' message. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
I'm running:
MSI m/board
Q6600 2.4 core to quad
4 GB DDR 667 RAM
ATI Radeon Toxic Saphire 3870 Graphics card
Windows VIsta Ultimate 64BIt
Thank you in advance

I'd read through all the possible causes of this crash and the fixes that went with them and none worked for me. I read about the saitek eclipse being a cause, I shrugged it off as one of those unique problems caused with a certain hardware/software/driver combination.
After trying everything, I thought I may as well see if there's any weight behind it. After unplugging my saitek eclipse and just starting it up with a mouse, it worked, it loaded straight into the game. The second I plugged it back in again the game crashed.
So, what the hell?

I worked out a fix. I remembered a similar problem I had with this keyboard, it's to do with the elements that make it multi-media. The buttons in the corner and so on.
For the fix, go to device manager > human interface devices > disable the bottom two "USB Human Interface Device", this disables all the multi-media stuff and makes it just a normal keyboard.
The game should run now, when you exit, just enable them all again.

Yup, that fixes the problem all right -- thx for that. All I could get from EA support is: "update drivers" and "meet system requirements." Worthless.
Are those human interface keys used for anyrthing else? My Saitek still seems to be working normally.
Wonder if Saitek Eclipse II owners have had the same problem with this game?
Thx again for the fix.

It's completely possible that the 2 USB human interface drivers do nothing. Hardware manufacturer's seem to insist on putting in lots of redundant systems. Much like software creators.
The problem is that the hardware redundancies bog your system down. My trackball had four USB human interface drivers on my old computer and two on this one. Plus my cell phone has three (count it three) icons in File Manager (even though it only needs one) and six (yes, count it six) USB Interface modules plus four USB root hub modules. For a stupid cellphone that isn't even all that advanced!

Well I have a problem when customizing any part of car when I'm on the G-MAC missions it just freezes and i've stop all backround running tasks diabled my virus protection and all my drivers are up to date sound, graphics and I've tried reinstalling the game and it still happens, i'm getting fed up with this because bugs and problems like this were supposed to be clarified in the game creating studios before they shipped the game all over. I'm running: XP Home,2.20GHz Core 2 Duo, NVIDIA 8600GT 1GB DDR2, 2GB DDR 800MHz RAM.

my game crashes whenever i try to edit things in autosculpt. i try to change something and it crashes. its always random too, so i cant just avoid changing that part. i tried editing the windows registry and it helped alot but, it still crashes. it also crashes while driving too, just not as much. i used to love nfs, but now im starting to think its a POS. i just glad it still is somewhat playable because i think it could actually be a pretty good game.
i hope EA gets a patch out soon....

Just a quick note here. I too was having the problem where the DOS box would come up and then crash with no explaination. After reading though the forums for several hours I came up a solution that worked in my situation. I post this not as an expert, but simply as someone who was just as frustrated as you.
First, I have a Q8400 Dual core 3.0Ghz CPU on an ASUS P5B-Deluxe m obo, w/2Gb PC-5300 OCZ dual channel, an nVidia 8600GT w/512Mb DDR3, Sound Blaster X-Fi and Vista Ultimate 32, blah blah, blah. Anyway, I had my rig OC'd to 3.4Ghz and I had lots of TSR's including Riva Tuner 2.08. When I turned off Riva, the damn game booted right away but played like crap, very choppy. I backed down my CPU and memory to stock speeds, updated my Riva to 2.22 and my nVidia drivers (get this from 178.13 to 178.24!!) and it fired right up!. After dinking with it for a bit, I discovered that I could actually run Riva on the new drivers without issue, but as soon as I tried to crank up my CPU again, it started getting choppy again. I don't know why, but I've played a lot of games in the last 15 years and I've never seen any program NOT work due to an OC, but it appears that this one does. Go figure. I hope this helps at least some of you guys. It really is a fun game once you get it rolling... Good Luck.

This is a reply I got from EA Support:
"This game is not supported on the 64bit format as it was never tested"

What game company DOESNT test on 64-bit??
I havn't been able to run the game for longer than 2:30. I mean it crashes exactly 2:30 into playing, and all i'm doing is playing around in free-roam.
I've been talking with EA Support, and of course its absolutly useless, they expect you to change 10 different settings to make the game run, and they dont seem to want to accept any responsibility. If they had said "We'll forward this issue to our developer working on the upcoming patch" that would have made me satisfied, instead they just kept repeating themselves and insisting that its MY computer thats the problem.
In any case, I do have a Ideazon Merc Stealth Illuminated Keyboard with 20+ extra buttons on it, I'll have to try the above solution of removing the keyboard and see if that works. Message was edited by: Ceashure (nfs)

I'm pretty sure the game box I have does not mention that the game ONLY works on 32-bit operating systems so if it hasn't been tested thoroughly on 64-bit Windows then EA's testers should be ashamed of themselves as it's not like 64-bit operating systems have just come out... they've been around for years now! :O

I recently read on the forum, to have the game work, I need to disable the bottom two USB human interface devices. I'm pretty computer illiterate. I did find the human interface devices but could only disable the bottom one and the game still would not run and I got the same nfs.exe message. The second device from the bottom would not give me the disable option, only the uninstall. Any suggestions on how to disable this device so my son will stop with the pitiful looks. My computer is a Dell 3100 with Windows XP. Thank you for your help. Kevin

Shift is always crashing for me.
Usually it crashes straight after the load screen, before the 'select language' screen appears.
Other times it's basically random, it crashes at loading screens.. mid game.. mid customization. It's random.
I'm running it on Windows 7 64bit with ATI RADEON 4870.
Tried all the compatibility things, nothing works till I restart my PC - then it usually lets me play for like 30 minutes without crashing.
