For lack of keeping current with the ever changing technologies, I have put myself into a situation that I can't figure out for myself, so now I am asking for help. I am currently playing Shift on the PS3, and get online through my laptop connected by a USB modem stick. From what I'm told by friends etc., I need a router to connect the PS3 and the laptop which is my only way to get online at this time. I've tried sharing the connection through the LAN, but usually see limited or no connectivity warnings, and do not see the PS3 on my laptop using Win XP Pro Media for an OS. The other thing is with the modem stick, I am averaging 2 mbps on HSUPA technology, and wonder if I have enough juice to connect and play online. Is there anyone out there with a similar setup, that can recommend what I need to get?
Any help would be appreciated... Thanks

When you say USB modem stick do you mean like a wireless broadband connection provided by your ISP or is it one of these ones that is wired and connects to a telephone point in your house?
A cheap router or unmanaged switch would do the trick though, you'd just have to set your laptop with a fixed IP address then tell the PS3 to use that as its default gateway after setting up a network (where you can in turn tell your laptop to let other connections use the internet through it).
Also, chances are you wont see your PS3 from your Windows machine in the GUI; you should be able to ping it though after setting a fixed IP on the PS3, but I believe its only Vista and above that will show theres a device there.
On wireless though, you'd need to check how stable your connection is - it shouldn't be a problem having both the laptop and PS3 on at the same time (as your laptop will be using minimal bandwidth, unless your downloading piles of files) but if your connection varies greatly you might have a miserable time playing your PS3 online!

Hey, Hey! It is a wireless connection described as a mobile broadband USB modem (on the box), and I would describe it as a "cellular" modem. Basically correct as it involves rate plans, service contracts, SIM cards, etc. Totally portable, works pretty well everywhere I've had to go, which includes rural areas as well as cities large or small. Thanks for the info too, by the way, I didn't know it was Vista and above to see other devices, and I never considered stability of my connection before. A possible explanation why I could never get ProStreet to work well online either. I've tested for speed, and would like to find out the "minimum requirements" to play, but stability is a good point. Thanks!
