Only few words. About "exellent", "modern" "great" graphics in Shift we can read on each online ressourse, in each forum. But for me it seems to be very strange. All you know, what a game is usually compared with Shift: its Race Driver GRID. Just here I want to offer two collages... nothing to say, I only can laugh upon shift's "exellent" graphics. And what about you?

Grid looks better, but Shift plays better...for the most part. Codemasters has had plenty of time to perfect their racing games, this is Slightly Mad's first go at it and they did a good job.

cars look much better (especially on pc in 1920x1080 res) in shift than grid and so does the cockpit view. Grid has nice buildings.... however i'm not site seeing i'm busy racing.

ps; those white and red road barriers also look 500% in shift

Shift looks by far superior to GRID. I have GRID that is heavily modded and looks far better than original GRID and it has no chance versus Shift.

Shift not only decimates GRID it also looks better than any other racer out there or to be released including Forza 3 and GT5p/GT5. And please no bullshots or promo shots. Only ingame racing non-offscreen shots or bust.

GRID vanilla

My God! Are you PR staff of EA? First of all, I believe, that these screens are from "heavily modded" game, not original Shift. They all made in somewhat Photoshop for PR, its clear. And for what it needed? Its absolutly clear in MY cscreens, that THE TYPE of shifts' graphics is related to somewhat Stone Age. Its absolutly shameful! This type knows nothing about objects' depth, light and farness effects. It made simply by hands, like in somewhat NFS-3, and it can represent only near enviroment of the track, with large and far objects its catastrofically falls. You see it in my screens, have you eyes? Shifts' sharpness is very brute and unpleasurent, that lines simply pricks eyes: and that furious monotonous grey coloration! Shift made no any progress, it use graphics type of 2003-2004 and use possibilities of modern graphics cards, loading it with that primitive hand-made textures. And, so, we must wait for half of hour untill track will load itself. Its real disgrace for 2009 year game! And Codies won again.
PS And here

you can see Laguna Seca gaimplay video of EGT (2006). Video quality is low, buts its clear, that graphics here just better, more beatifull, pleasurent and even sometimes more detalized, than in your movie. What colours, what light! Only one background mountain is not so good, really. But shifts Laguna looks like somewhat concentration camp, where bomb destroied stove for prisoners' cremature, and, so , we see ashes upon all surfaces.
And just here

- other really nice track. And you can find many other games from time of 2003, wich looks no doubt better, then shift

honestly?
you think GRID's is better...?

they BLUR EVERYTHING!!! that's what makes it better looking! BLUR!

why don't you smudge your screen with fat all over the place so it looks blurry... and then you'll like it

I played a 2-lap race in the Zonda R, and then decided to do the same in GRID, and WOW what a surprise... everything felt SOOO CG...

okay maybe it was because the "driving feel" in Shift is A LOT better than in GRID, because of the motion blur + shake + bump and everything

but GRID was just so plain... honestly, i felt scarier at 230km/h in shift than at 320km/h in grid also because grid has REALLY sticky tires and cars don't slow down as much... more forgiving in a way

but laptime of 2:21 in shift vs 1:51 in grid *grid one has 2 tight chicanes near the end missing and can reach higher speed a LOT faster*

to be honest, SHIFT's experience is 10x more "real" than in GRID

Here we discuss graphics, however. And in MY pictures you can see, that shift really lose "f" letter in its title! GRID, at least, made greaaaaaat progress in cities enviroment representation, shift made nothing.
And telling about realism... what about damage? GRID envolve it, and it reached greaaat progress in realism by that. You must understand, that Codies made very sophisticated work for not only driving itself, but all the process of racing became realistic and pleasurent for playing, and they achieved this result. Shift - not in such scale. But not here about it.

Uh, which pictures belong to which games? And if you repost them for me then could you follow the 655 pixel width rule? I don't like scrolling back and forth on my screen because you don't have a little bar at the bottom of yours.

Thanks.

What the heck are you talking about?

Those Shfit screens are native resolution framebuffer grabs done by MYSELF with FRAPs screenshot function capturing EXACTLY what is rendered by my PC. No mods nothing just highest settings and proper gamma/contrast and brightness setting for game.

I'll do it short and quick becouse frankly I dont have much interest to talk with someone that has basically 0 knowledge in rendering tech and pretends to know they have more knowledge.

Also dont use Google translate for your texts as it is really hard to understand what you write..

First the screenshots I posted clearly shows how superior Shfit is in the graphcis department techwise and artistically vs any other racer (goal: realistic looking graphics ingame).

One proper native FP16 64bit HDR format to rperesent a wide range for lighting. Why the lighting looks so much better in Shift with intensity yet produces barely any 'color bleeding' something GRID suffers from.

True dynamic shadow system with sun as source makes shadow projection and deformation correct for all objects. This gives depth to scene.Proper self-shadowing on cars and car parts. GRID suffers from lowres world shadows and mainly static shadow system bar cars.

Use of DOF and high sample motionblur to produce proper scene depth and motion enhancement. As opposed to GRIDs low sample motionblur and non dynamic DOF system.

Immensly superior shading system and technique. Shading layers and mapping is a generation beyond GRID.

Use of proper dynamic SSAO solution (Shift - cars + scene) and no fake "SSAO" like GRID (GRID - only for cars).

Highres textures across the board for Shift vs GRID has medium-res textures. Shift has normal mapping and POM for skidmarks and perhaps more vs GRIDs limited normal mapped and non mapped textures. Shift textures are not handpainted they are generated by software and derivate from photos. GRID does about the same. It's the norm in the business.

Shift proper buffers with limited downscaling versus GRID with heavy PP buffer downscaling hence the bluriness and bluriness of effects.

Shift sharpness is normal like other games. Sure some specular aliasing present but quite the norm in many games.

So I kept it short as I said highlighting technical stuff Shfit is by far superior at and why Shfit looks so much better than GRID. And not only becouse Shfit dev artist are more skilled making lighting condition paramters match reality so good but also becouse of the tech.

Thank the heavens Shfit whent for realistic looks and lighting and not the GRID bloom abuse usage. mather of taste but abuse of bloom to make everything shine like a atom bomb explosion is a lastgen watermark.

Reality is the reference for graphics in a car game.

If you modified GRID, why not to do the same with shift? And its absolutly no doubt, that all game previews were much better, then it occured then in real game. I suspend, that you use such special modification, wich simply cannot work on usual systems, especially consoles with it 2-years -ago hardware, but it can give better preview. However, NOW that screens doesnt seems so good for me. I use GTS250, maximum quality (not resolution)

I dont use translate. May be, you prefer french or russian? I dont like this language and usually avoid, so, have no practice.

About technology I can only laugh. You tell many words, note different parametres, but for what? I see the result of it. Tell me, is result - here ?

This is your achievments?
All advanteges of Shift vs Grid you mention are in quantity & number. But really it results only in track loading time!
In aspect of realism and beaty - no achievments, because the NATURE of this drawing is the same as on upper furious screen. They made forced detalisation, but it simply offend eyes, because all objects - of one level, no differentiation by distance. And for large objects, not only buildings, no enough detalisation ressourses, and we see real crash.
I cannot realize, how can you tell me "shift better then GRID" after veiwing that initial screens? Are you really blind? Nothing to say about technology, but we SEE, that GRID solved the greatest problem of representation of large-scale 3D enviroment. It cover all! Open, please, your eyes and look here, for example

Shift ABSOLUTLY cannot do it, it tries to hide itself in cocpit view and to compress perspective... thats... pour rien!... Ugliness climb out contrary to efforts. Dont tell me about "ingame" graphics! My screens are "ingame", too, and good modern games tries to do ALL perspectives beatifull and realistic. That, what I show on shift screens, is simply weird hackwork.

cem_ea_id.YodaStar wrote:Thank the heavens Shfit whent for realistic looks and lighting and not the GRID bloom abuse usage. mather of taste but abuse of bloom to make everything shine like a atom bomb explosion is a lastgen watermark.

No words about Grids' blur... I made in GRID 1500 online wins, but I absolutly wasnt suffered with blur. Atmosohere is exellent, and firstly it was real delight. But its useless to tell. Othervise, I have to note again that really suffering grey backgrounds in shift. For what you again offer that Laguna Seca? Here not nucklear bomb, but that, about I said: in concentration camp. Why you dont comment my Laguna Seca video? Its easy for you, its your native language. Here we see, what is TALENTED graphics. SMS undertake their super-realism travails, but lack of talent is too much. Realistic and beatifull graphics is here

No word, just pictures... yes Shift is the only game on PC which can challenge the all time reference Gran Turismo.

Original screenshot reduced to 800x600 from 1650x1080:

We see toy car on monotonous grey background. In game I cant see car, I see enviroment. And, so, where is it? Is it grass? Is it tarmac, in the ends of all?

i loved grid for it's graphics.... but Shift blows grid out of the water. If I look out of my car in real life if looks much more like Shift than grid, I never see that brown yellow haze that is in about every race in Grid. I prefer boring grey than boring brown.
about your statement "My God! Are you PR staff of EA? First of all, I believe, that these screens are from "heavily modded" game, not original Shift" i have an unmodded grid and unmodded SHIFT. I don't know how the console versions look like but the pictures on my PC even surpasses those posted by YodaStar as I' m running it at 1920x1080the pictures on my PC even surpasses those posted by YodaStar as I' m running it at 1920x1080
