I have a asus nvidia 9600gt with the most up to date drivers, and I thought the phys-x is installed with it, and if not, then I have the version from the nfs shift dvd.

I would try uninstall the game, then phys-x, and finally your video drivers. Reboot. Ignore windows trying to reinstall any drivers if you get them. (or cancel them) Download the latest 180 series driver from Nvidia (don't use the 190 series for now). Install it, along with whatever version of phys-x came with it. Reboot. Now install NFS Shift. What does it do now?

I can't find the 180 series for windows 7 64 bit, so thats a bit of a problem

I could but I really cant be bothered, you dont have the specs to run shift so I suggest:

a) delete your downloaded copy

or

b) take it back to shop and upgrade your pc.

Have you tried wiping shift from the registry via regedit and doing a fresh install? is 7 like vista in sense of admin? are you running it as admin...if i remember right i needed to run the patched game as admin on vista.
