cem_ea_id.ve-8 wrote:Well, i just read this thread and thought id sign up to post a reply. i remember playing the demo of the first game a few months before it was released, and was blown away by it, so i brought it the day it was released, ive brought every one since then, ecxept the appauling under cover. I also took part in the MCO beta testing, and as mentioned already, it was massively customizable, ill give you an example....
When you first load the game, you are given a random car, it could be any one of the hundred or so cars in the game ( i think thats how many cars there were any way) it was a classic ford, cant remember what, but it was a 50s car. after a few races i managed to buy a very mangled charger 440r/t another player was selling, i ripped the engine out put it into my ford and tuned the hell out of it....such was the tuning that you could do whatever you wanted, choose and fit bigger cams from an almost wrecklessly large selection, match the pistons and valves, uprate the carbs ect......but be careful, get it wrong and you would be drowning the engine in fuel and wasting power, winning a race really was down to how well you could tune. They really would have a genre dominating game if they remade this with todays technology, i would deffinatley buy it and probably get devorced because id be on it so much.
The first game really was still the best in mho, the physics were awesome, i remember coming over a crest on the alpine corse many times on the wrong side of the road, clipping a civilian car and barrel rolling my way down the road in a frighteningly realistic way, the only thing missing was damage. EA really has to go back to these type of physics, they just finish the game off, i always find it dissapointing when a developer goes really in depth with realistic graphichs and real world enviroment but messes it all up with arcade style physics (test drive unlimited rings a bell there)...lets hope shift isnt going to take that route because it looks like its shaping up to be a really great game, mind you, simbin are in charge this time, and their games have always got good physics.
By the way, if anybody is interested, i have all the original games for pc, if theres a way to share them in the community without breaking copyright laws id be happy to help, it might be worth noting though that i cant manage to get nfs1 to work on vista.....anyone know how to?
NFS 1 works on Win 95 and 98 only. so if you're going to play it you're going to get one of those older computers.

Hey any of you guys remember the Hidden Purple Warrior Car in the First NFS? (I Think) It was ridiculously quick and had a what sounded like a toy laser gun-like horn
Oh and also the Hidden Moon Track with the Huge Jump after the last corner? Haha. I remember i would have contests with my friends to see who could get the farthest Oh the memories, I cant believe that was almost 15 years ago already, Damn time flies...

If my memory serves me correctly, I bought my first Thrustmaster wheel for NFS1, back when they weren't flimsy mainstream gadgets.
NFS 1 had bitmap dashboards, and they were, in fact, the first photo-realistic ones ever... because they were photos!
NFS 3 introduced the first 3D Dashboard ever, but to enjoy it you needed to link 2 3DFX Voodoo extreme video cards, basically the ancestor of today's SLI and Crossfire. I remember picking up 2 of these babies at a COMPUSA just for this game and installing them in my Compaq Presario 4850 like it was yesterday... oh joy... The Corvette's 3D cockpit on the canyon road!!!
Another often forgotten fact: Eden Studios (then named Eden Games immsmc, the makers of Test Drive Unlimited, were responsible for the PSX version of Porsche Unleashed. The PSX version had something that the PC version didn't: an open-world mode set in the south of France, even with police chases. 9 years before TDU they were already working on the concept....
And that's why I'll never understand why EA chose to give the reins to Black Box when they already had talented teams at hand. Seriously you only need to look what a backstep HP2 was. I remember being shocked by its non-existent steering wheel support, the absence of a cockpit view (seriously), and no 5.1 sound out of the box. Everyone offered 5.1 surround sound but not EA... how 'bout that!
Anyway, now that real devs are in charge the franchise's history can resume. I'll gladly forget whatever happened between Porsche Unleashed and Shift.

You have good taste and games, and you know what you are talking about, i loved that game i miss it they really do need to make another motor city online i would pay what ever that cost to buy it every month just to play it. it was only like what 10$ dollers a month to play motor city online, i didn't care one bit, i'm sure you didn't either

I have played NFS games forever & they have been getting worse with each release since Most wanted. This one could have put the Title back on top because it would be a good game if it didn't have so many bugs.
But there is no denying that NFS SHIFT has more bugs than the garbage bins outside of a McDonald's Restaurant and if the game had been released with the F removed from the title SHIFT it would have described the game better & I guarantee that it would have went unnoticed by EA's Quality Controllers.

Not to take away from Shift but....
A co-worker and I are working on getting NFS SE to work in a virtual enviroment either using softgrid or thinstal vitual package. This would allow the game to run in its only virtual enviroment on the OS which reduces some of the compatiblility issues plus resolves installation issues. hmmm it will be interesting to see what EA's reaction will be...oh well, once the dust has settled on Shift, the virtual NFS SE might get released.

I played every title and Porsche Unleashed was the best to play with a wheel. the rest were just crapy arcade games...
Porsche Unleashed online was the bomb... so many people online I think I played the game for 2-3 years straight online...
I was hoping Shift was the EA comeback... I want to race people not play cops and robbers like half the stupid titles.......

That was a cool trip down memory lane !!! I thought I had owned all the titles but now know better. Still though, between the three Playstations and the titles I have on PC I'm not doing too bad. Great series of games throughout, and I will thank people forever for them !!! I do remember also getting to race with dumptrucks and school buses and a slew of other "different" vehicles on the PC version of NFS II after entering codes that made us laugh like fools back in the day. I honestly hope there will never be an end for the need for speed...

underground 1 was the best game in terms of style and interface+ good gameplay, sad i just wish there were a track editor with importing from 3ds and maya to make new tracks , that game would never end. IMHO

yes, Porsche Unleashed was the best (of nothing), until Shift release
a month ago I wouldn't believe anyone on Earth telling me I would buy a NFS, and love it. Then I was so disppointed with Forza 3 demo that I downloaded Shift demo, and bought it the same day. If it wasn't part of this poor serie, everyone would give it a second chance, and realize it's awesome. Best console racing game I've ever played, ever. The biggest drawback I can think of is after Shift, Forza 3 will feel arcade
