Maybe EA have an interest in seeing increased console sales.

Perhaps we should all refuse to jump through hoops to get a game working. Imagine if every time you bought a music cd or movie dvd you had to perform all sorts of configuration tricks to get it to play you would soon be crying foul.

Now imagine that all these problem CDs or DVDs came from one publisher and one publisher only you would soon learn not to buy their products.

If we want EA's attention we should all return our copies of Shift to the retailer for a refund as the product is clearly not of 'merchantable quality'.

Well said, twearty.

Perhaps EA and the developers are banging their heads together as we speak, working hard to resolve all these issues, but surely they could at least let us know via the forum that they are looking into the problems and state an approx. deadline for the next patch? It only takes a few moments to be courteous after all.

Well its just you and me Doctor; everyone else seems perfectly willing to be taken for a ride.

That's why there is no response from EA. They know their customers.

This is my first post here. I felt the need to relay my experience with this game.

I have 2 operating systems on the same computer, same hardware etc, its not dual boot or anything like that. I use imaging software (Acronis) to create a backup of my C: drive which holds pretty much only the operating system i have installed on there. These consist of Windows XP Pro 32bit and Windows XP 64bit.

I installed Shift to me D: partition under games and tried to play it, again and again and again, everytime the game would crash before getting into the first race, i tried all the suggestions in this thread with no luck whatsoever. It occured to me that people on here were having more luck with Vista, particularly the 64bit variety, so i thought why not give it a shot on my XP64bit, which i promptly imaged back onto the C: partition, tired the game again... shock horror, the game worked! I played the whole of the first race with the keyboard without a hiccup, i then changed the controls to use my RGT wheel... first corner in it crashed.

To cut a long story short, it seems to me that this game is really aimed at 64bit operating systems, at least thats what i think.

I'll just return this and get the xbox360 version, i wash my hands with shoddy ports from console to PC... i just wanted the PC version so i could make good use of my racing wheel, which is afterall why i bought the damn thing.

Well after toying with this for a few hours, like 6 to be exact, I finally found a solution for MY crashing problem during th test track. I believe it's something to do with the shaders/shadows. Or an object located in the crashing tracks that has a problem with the shadows. This is how i'm now running my game. A little choppy, but it gets the job done without crashing.

I've tried turning off the shadows, AA, v-sync, setting everything to Low and lowering the resolution from my native 1920x1200; I've even tried running the game in a window but, nope, the game crashes everytime I try to start a race during the loading in Vista SP2 64-bit. Yet I've had absolutely no problems whatsoever with playing the game in 7 RC 64-bit.

Sure, at least I can play it but I want it to run in Vista properly, where all my other games are installed, not have to boot into what is an unfinished operating system in order to play ONE game!

Same solution/similar solution for me, i've updated the NVIDIA physx at lastest version, disabled the Vsync and disabled the shadow. Now work without any problem(details set "medium")

Ok, and this is my solution. It's working for me, and my pal - 2 different computers, so it may be good.
1. Lanch the game, go to graphic settings - set shadows to off, and change v-sync (doesn't matter on or off, just change it from the value it was set to) - the system will say the game needs to be restarted to change the settings (v-sync config does that - that is why it doesn't matter if you turn it on or off, just change)
2. restart the game, start a race - it should be ok
3. after one race, go to graphic settings, turn on shadows (on my rather old stuff, i set it to low)
4. start another race, and another and another - from now on, you should have the game working, with the shadows turned on and no crashes.

Unfortunately, you have to repeat this operation, if you exit the game.

Hey listen guys,

I was having these exact same problems, with the game CTDing as soon as the test lap started to load. I messed around for hours trying to fix it, changing graphics and controller settings back and forth etc etc.. nothing worked of course.

Then! I found that I had an older incarnation of the PHYSX software installed, and it was causing the conflict. I uninstalled every scrap of the old Physx software and drivers, ran registry mechanic and then reinstalled the Phsyx software using the version that comes with Shift, and hallelujah, the game is running no problem.

Uninstall your Physx software totally, and then reinstall the version that comes on your disc/download in the Phsyx folder, it might fix your problems, it fixed mine.

Nope! I had no PHYSX software installed before i installed this Need for Speed *. So it is the PhysX from the Nfs Shift Dvd.

Ever since I created this thread...
I've temporary put a 'on-hold' on my career advancement on SHIFT. Currently at Tier3, but I just got frustrated on the game and its big lists of bugs. As you go on, there are some tracks in which you can't finish on the podium, and that you have to settled with fourth or below, in order to get through the track. The bug that I got is, whenever I finished podium on some tracks, the "finished leadersboard" just wouldn't come up. So, everytime I face this situation, I just have to ctrl+alt+del and end the game. And if you end the game like this for 3-4times in a row, your save game will b crashed. I've restarted my career for at least 4-5 times, at times, I reached tier 4, got a GT-R and there it goes, couldn't finish the track and crashed my career.

Tips: Make sure you backup ur profile in another folder

Till a better patch comes out. Career = on hold
